2004 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The f-150 is the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. With nearly 900,000 annual sales, the f-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in america for 21 consecutive years. now, they've thrown away the old formula and created a brand new f-150 from the ground up. ford admits the new f-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build than the wildly successful previous version. It is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world. All of the new f-150 models feature all-new interiors that show attention to detail. The seats vary, but all are comfortable and supportive. Each boasts its own interior style and features engines, suspensions and cab configurations designed to meet specific needs. It features an all-new work-truck interior and comes with all the basics such as 40/20/40 bench seats in vinyl or cloth, an all-plastic dashboard, a black grille and 17-inch steel wheels. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab styles. An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd automatic retails for $21,215, while a long-wheelbase (145-inch) 4x4 is priced at $24,855. stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx starts at $22,215. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices do not include the destination charge of $795.) xlt is ford's volume model and comes with its own egg crate grille style. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercrew and supercab versions offer power rear windows. The xlt comes with the new overhead rail console system and fog lamps when ordered as a 4x4. Xlt supercab 4x4 4. 6-liter v8 automatic retails for $30,085 msrp. fx4 is a specialty 4x4 off-road model. Fx4 comes only in a stepside version with special chrome interior trim and markings, and a floor console with floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab and supercrew body styles with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 300-horsepower 5. 4-liter 3-valve-per-cylinder v8, which ford says has the best fuel consumption of any v8 engine it has ever built. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather and the audiophile system are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercab 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $32,185. lariat is the luxury model and, for the time being, sits at the top of the line. Lariat has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. It amplifies the all-new interior with black-on-cream instrumentation, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. The nearest competitor has only 12 variations, a fact that ford hopes will bring more people into its dealerships. In addition to the 26 variants of the f-150 within the five model ranges, there are dozens of options,. walkaroundall ford f-150s now have the front window style popularized on the f-250 and f-350 super duty pickups: a sharp cut in the forward part of the door sheet metal that drops away to allow much clearer viewing of the large rearview mirrors on both sides. the whole nose is shaped more squarely, the grilles are larger and bolder, the bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is more sculpted, and every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. It's the seven-crossmember skeleton onto which everything else bolts, and accounts for quite a bit of the nearly 675 pounds more weight of the new f-150 compared to the old truck. The frame is nine times more resistant to twisting and 50 percent more resistant to bending than the old c-shaped frame. the front suspension is a completely new double-wishbone style for both 2wd and 4wd versions. The rear suspension now has outboard, rather than inboard, shock absorbers to control the rear end of the truck better in quick maneuvers, along with wider, heavier three-inch leaf springs. the steering has been changed to a heavy-duty power-assisted rack-and-pinion system. The ford truck folks committed only one unpardonable by us: the clear plastic over the instrument pod is way, way too reflective and makes most of the instruments difficult to see in bright sunlight. Ford says that, between these two things, the 5. 4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested. 2007 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved interior, more safety features. introductiona solstice, not an equinox, is an event to celebrate. An equinox is by comparison a non-event, when light and dark are equal, when everything is just alright. the chevrolet equinox may not represent the return of the sun, either, but it should be considerably brighter for '07, thanks to a bounty of improvements that really are worth celebrating. Instruments and controls are largely new, and the chassis settings revised for better ride and handling. New options include upgraded audio systems, a remote starter, and at last a navigation system integrated into the stereo. these are welcome changes because we have not been enthralled with the equinox cabin. equinox is chevrolet's answer to the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. But equinox is bigger and roomier than any of these competitors, and has features that enhance its versatility. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. It's nearly 14 inches longer than ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. Its long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. However, equinox seats only five, because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row, as does the toyota rav4. Like escape, cr-v and rav4, the equinox is based on a passenger-car design but has an interior like a traditional suv. Therefore, industry observers and other car crazies call the equinox a crossover utility because it crosses over the line from truck to car. lineupthe 2007 chevy equinox comes in two trim levels: the basic ls and the better-appointed lt. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). All models come with a 3. 4-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission. equinox ls fwd 22,180) and awd 23,680) come with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; cloth upholstery; a fold-flat front passenger seat; a multi-flex 60/40 split rear bench seat that folds, slides, and reclines; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; and power windows, mirrors, and locks with remote keyless entry. Tires are bridgestone p235/65 all-season radials on 16-inch steel wheels. Added as standard on '07 models are a driver information center and new safety features. Options for the ls include an upgraded audio system with mp3 capability 135), onstar communications 1,045), deep-tinted glass 275), and a tow package 350). An engine block heater 50) and carpeted floor mats 40) are also available. lt fwd 22,970) and awd 24,470) add fog lights, carpeted floor mats, deep tinted glass, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Mirrors, door handles, and roof-rack side rails are body-color rather than charcoal or black. Optional side-impact and head-curtain airbags 395) come with a rollover sensor, so they can provide head and torso protection in a rollover as well as a side impact. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy equinox is aerodynamically smoother, thanks to a subtle re-shaping of front and rear fascias as well as the rear spoiler. From the front, equinox still looks the part of a chevy truck, with its requisite single-bar grille sporting a large gold chevrolet bow-tie emblem. But the black mask overlapping the front bumper has shrunken and retreated, which we find a subtle but worthwhile aesthetic improvement. it's harder to see the difference in the rear spoiler. And in side view, equinox looks pretty much the same as before. That's good, because we've liked equinox from that angle since it debuted for '05. in that broadside view, equinox looks quite a bit different from the rest of the chevy truck family. The roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. Equinox is based on a car-type platform, with unit-body construction rather than body on frame for better ride and handling. interiorinside, where the people live, work and ride, is where the chevy equinox shines when compared to some of its competitors. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. The floor-mounted cupholder works well, while slots farther to the rear holds cds angled forward for easy selection. the equinox cabin is a clean and functional design. That said, some of the materials and control interfaces we found inside last year's equinox seemed to us less than bright. Window switches are now lighted. Also new for '07 is a standard driver information center that includes more than 20 personalization and vehicle information features, such as trip odometer, fuel range, outside temperature display and door locking programs. the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. With the rear seat full forward, there's 35. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. because the rear seatback is split 60/40, equinox can transport two rear passengers along with long cargo items. The front passenger seat folds flat, further extending cargo room length. When folded, the hard front seatback can be used as a table or desktop. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and, new for '07, a fold-down center armrest with two additional cupholders. Rear head restraints were downscaled last year, improving rearward visibility for the driver. driving impressionchevrolet's 3. 4-liter unit is an old pushrod-overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners (although it does feature hydraulic roller lifters, just like a corvette). It feels strained when pushed at high rpm. Still, equinox delivers good acceleration under most circumstances, and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are improved somewhat for '07, at 19/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/25 for the awd version. the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer, the same as the more powerful escape and rav4 v6s. its long wheelbase and 3800-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops. the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet steering effort is low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. We don't think the average driver will feel the difference between this system and more conventional hydraulics, and that's a good thing. Unlike a hydraulic servo, the electric booster doesn't use engine power, resulting in slightly better fuel economy. stabilitrak electronic stability control helps drivers maintain c.
